Verify answers and reuse prompts

A fluent answer can contain errors. The work is finished when the result passes an appropriate check before you send it or use it to make a decision.

The idea

Compare names, numbers and dates with the source. If the model cites a document, open it and check that it supports the claim: asking for citations does not ensure they exist or are relevant. Current facts need current sources or available, verified research tools. Ask for a short explanation supported by checkable evidence; you do not need the model’s full internal reasoning.

A vague request

Check everything and tell me if I can send it.

Why it is incomplete

The model may repeat its own mistakes. The decision needs comparison with sources and requirements outside the answer.

A prompt to try

Try the prompt in your usual AI tool. Select and copy the text; no coding is needed. Access, features and limits depend on the tool and plan you use.

Task: prepare [result] for [audience].
Goal: [concrete use for the result].
Available information: [relevant, authorised text].
Constraints: [tone, length, information not to add].
Format: [required structure].
Missing facts: flag them without inventing; ask up to three questions if essential.
Checking criteria: [facts, completeness, format].
Deliver the result and a short list of points to check against the source.

What to look for

This template is a starting point to fill in, not a universal formula. Final verification remains your responsibility; a model-generated checklist can help identify points to inspect.

Now try it

Your exercise

Final exercise: write a prompt to turn these notes into an update of at most 120 words and a next-actions table. Notes: “Test environment ready. Updated file received. Import still to perform. Elena verifies the restore by 22 October. Maintenance window to agree. No approved release date.” Do not use real company data.

Check the result

  • Does the update keep the import pending?
  • Does it assign Elena only to restore verification?
  • Does it leave the maintenance window and release date undefined?
  • Does the table preserve deadlines and flag missing fields?
See the commented answer

A correct result says the environment and file are ready, while the import and agreement on the window are pending. Table: import — owner and deadline undefined; restore verification — Elena, 22 October; agree window — owner and deadline undefined. The release has no approved date. Assess the update and table separately: the 120-word limit applies to the update.
